Menopause is a stage in life every woman will eventually face. Your experience with menopause may be very different from what other women go through. A typical period for menopause is around age 45, however every woman is different and certain factors can affect at what point in your life you experience this change. A smoking habit can accelerate the process, causing your menstrual cycle to end at an earlier age.
Perimenopause, the time frame leading up to your final period in which you are no longer fertile, usually occurs about ten years before you experience menopause. Common signs of perimenopause include vaginal dryness, decreased sex drive, pain with intercourse, hot flashes and mood swings. Symptoms will affect you both physically and emotionally largely due to a fluctuation in hormone levels. Because there are many signs, it is sometimes difficult to diagnose perimenopause based off of symptoms alone. For this reason, you may want to consider additional testing over a period of time to determine if you are indeed perimenopausal.
You will notice that your period occurs less often until your menstrual cycle completely stops. At this point, when you have not had a period for one year, you have gone through the natural change process, menopause.
